Find books that can turn your child into a reader
Choose from our “Just Right” graded book ideas list
While we help children become more capable readers, some are still reluctant. Based on years of frustration, they still connect reading to failure.
One way to turn this around is to find a book or books that can turn your child on to reading. To do this, you need two things:
- Know your child’s reading grade level and reading “zone”
- A list of recommended books with reading levels
1. Reading Zone
Each child has a reading zone, a 1-2 grade range of reading difficulty called the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), where reading is comfortable without being boring. You need to choose books in your child’s reading level and ZPD. Here are ZPDs by reading level: ZPD Reference Chart
2. Book Ideas by Grade
Gemm Learning staff have created a list of books by reading grade. The list is based on the years of teaching experience of Gemm staff, seeing books that have been shown to be “the one” that sparked a love of reading.
They are sorted by level of difficulty with indications of suitability, by school grade, by gender where appropriate, and by subject matter.
